New Delhi is a metropolitan city and national capital of India. It is on
the west bank of the Yamuna River in the union territory of Delhi in
northern India. It is a planned city built as India's capital in the early
20th century. It is served by excellent road and railway systems and an
international airport.
New Delhi is laid out in a series of triangles, formed by broad, tree-lined
avenues radiating from numerous circles and squares. It looks like a garden
because of large parks throughout the city. The principal thoroughfare is
the Rajpath, which is part of a great central mall that extends three
kilometers from the main government buildings to the India Gate.
New Delhi’s architecture is primarily a mixture of Indian and European
styles. Its most prominent buildings are the President's House (Rashtrapati
Bhavan), the Central
Secretariat and Parliament House. It has many historic structures including
a 16th-century Red Fort, an astronomical observatory Jantar Mantar built in
1725.
New Delhi is the first city in the world where all public transport runs on
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). Its Delhi Transport Corporation operates the
world's largest fleet of environmentally-friendly CNG-run buses. Delhi metro,
operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, has average ridership
of 702,000 commuters per day.
